Lunch hour anthropology

notice one thing this lunchtime

Grant McCracken

Noticed this lunch hour February 14, 2008, small town Connecticut

I noticed this sign. It reposts the speed limit. I don't doubt that my neighborhoods love their children, but isn't this called taking the law into your own hands? What do we make of this? Is it a) a demonstration of the intensity of parental love, b) a sign of Yuppie entitlement, c) the beginning of the end of civil order? I guess it's all those things.

Grant,

I note that we don't know if this sign is changing an existing speed limit or simply reinforcing one. In my daughter's neighborhood in Texas, 15 mph is, in fact, the speed limit, and people get pissed at drivers who ignore it.

John, I assumed that because the signs were unofficial, the speed posted was. Glib assumption! How easy it is to do bad anthropology, even at lunch time! Thanks, Grant
